Cooking without Electricity: Dakota Fire Hole

This is the third post in the series: Cooking without Electricity. The current power outages on the east coast illustrate the deceptively fragile nature of the power grid. They make these posts quite timely. You can keep these cooking ideas in the back of your mind (or print out and place in a binder) so you will have them should you ever find yourself in a power outage.

I have not cooked over a Dakota Fire Hole yet.  I expect to the next time I go camping.  It is high on my list of emergency options for cooking because it doesn't take any special equipment nor special skills, you just need to dig a hole. This cooking method also requires very little fuel. 

Dakota Fire Holes are a great way to heat water or cook anything that you would normally put on the stove top.  I first learned about this method when I was reading some survival blogs a few years ago.
