Do You Know How To Make Vanilla Flavoring?

I LOVE making my own vanilla. I do not think it is less expensive to make (vs. purchasing at the store) unless you are like me and use tablespoons instead of teaspoons in your recipes.  If the recipe calls for 1 tsp I use at least 2 tsps and if I can really taste the vanilla in the recipe, I have been known to add 1 TBS in place of the 1 tsp.  That is my standard procedure when making vanilla ice cream, yogurt, or custard.

So, I can go through those little bottles of real vanilla flavoring pretty quick!  The strategy I use to satisfy my vanilla craving is to make it myself!  It is sooo easy!  And it doesn't take more than 5 minutes.

Here is what you need:

  • Vanilla Beans (I try to purchase mine in a glass jar.  That way you can mix the vanilla flavoring directly in the jar.)
  • Vodka (Purchase plain vodka - not one with flavoring.)
Take one bean pod out of  the jar and cut it into pieces.  I usually make each piece about two inches long. Score each piece so the tiny beans inside the pod are exposed. Drop the pieces into the jar you are going to use.

Fill the jar with vodka.

Place the cap back on the jar and label.  Let the jar sit for at least three months.  I keep mine on the shelf with the rest of my everyday spices.  Every time I go to get spices to cook dinner, I shake the jar. It will be ready to use at the end of the three months.

For all my LDS readers, making your own vanilla is no different then purchasing real vanilla flavoring from the grocery store.  The little bottles of flavoring you purchase are made from alcohol too.  You won't violate your Temple Recommend by making this.

I have been very upfront with my Bishop and Stake President about my purchase of vodka to make this. Both have assured me this is fine.

And there you have it!  Homemade vanilla flavoring!
